Safe Work Australia has released updates to 10 Model Codes of Practice, many of which affect workplace chemicals.  These include the “Managing risks of hazardous chemicals in the workplace” and the “Preparation of safety data sheets for hazardous chemicals”.  It’s important to stay up to date with the changes, as these Codes of Practice will assist duty holders in complying with the relevant legislation.

Codes of Practice in Australia are admissible in Court proceedings under the Work Health and Safety Act and Regulation.  These Code of Practice need to be adopted into each State and Territories legislation before they are to be used in that Jurisdiction.

In Australia, Safety Data Sheets need to be prepared for any chemical substance or mixture which is hazardous.  This includes cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, agricultural and veterinary chemicals and nanomaterials.

For copies of the updated Codes of Practice see the Safe Work Australia website.
