GHS: How to Address Organs Affected by STOT Effects

We previously examined the three main reasons the United Nations’ Globally Harmonised System of Classification and Labelling of Chemicals (GHS) differs when adopted into local regulations. In this session we will delve deeper, looking at the challenge of communicating specific target organ toxicity (STOT) effects.

We will start with the GHS guidance: what are the best practices established in the GHS to advise users of chemicals specifically which organs may be affected by their singe exposure or repeated exposure to a chemical? Next, we will look at the specific guidance of Japan, Europe, and the U.S. OSHA – and be astounded at how many different ways they have found to interpret how to use the GHS STOT organ communication elements.

Most importantly, we will discuss how companies can improve their management of STOT effect data and communications. We will look at the process requirements, from finding the data to assess the hazards, to making sense of that data and establishing precedence when multiple effects may arise from exposure to mixtures, and then getting the correct communication of the hazards onto labels and safety data sheets (SDSs).
