The Why & How of More Sustainable Products

Demand for both safer and greener formulated products has increased from both consumer and retailer groups. With an emerging consensus for how these terms are defined, manufacturers can now design products using the same standards and metrics retailers will use to measure progress toward a safer and greener product portfolio. Software platforms now enable manufacturers to optimize their products for sustainability leading to increased market share and enhanced brand loyalty.

Presenter(s): David Norem

David Norem combines strong technical expertise as an engineer, scientist, and Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) specialist with a passion for sustainability. In addition to serving in a Sustainability Manager role for both a retailer and apparel manufacturer, he has completed several LCAs and performed energy, greenhouse gas, and water use inventories and audits for scores of companies. As a Research Manager at UL, Dave is currently engaged in helping retailers gain insights into their consumer product portfolio and providing manufacturers the tools they need to better design products.

Dave holds a Masters degree in Environmental Engineering from the University of California – Berkeley, and dual Bachelor degrees in Chemistry and Civil & Environmental Engineering from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
