U.S. Hazard Communication Essentials [ Virtual Classroom ]

The U.S. Hazard Communication Essentials Training Course is scheduled for 9-19 March 2021 and will take place as a live online training session over the course of two weeks:

The adjusted times and delivery for the online training course are detailed below:

  • The course will be comprised of 4 online classroom sessions and 2 online office hours sessions (optional)
  • Course and office hours will run on the same days and at the same times for two consecutive weeks (Note: office hours differ from course hours)
  • UL will be recording the sessions in the event that you miss a session
  • Recordings can be made available to course registrants

*The online office hours sessions are reserved as Q&A sessions with the instructors. Attendance for these sessions is optional. Office hours are not recorded due to the potential discussion of confidential information.

Course Summary

U.S. Hazard Communication Essentials training begins with a discussion of the United States regulatory requirements that apply to SDS authoring under the Occupational Safety and Health Administration’s (OSHA’s) Hazard Communication Standard (HCS) 29 CFR 1910.1200.

This standard, as updated in 2012 (and thus termed HCS 2012), is the US’s implementation of the Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labelling (GHS).

Benefits Of Attending

This course describes and demonstrates the hazard classification, including the evaluation of data and application of professional judgment. You will learn how to accurately classify products using the OSHA implementation of GHS.

These principles are followed by a detailed discussion of the 16 sections of the SDS, section by section, where you will have the opportunity to complete a practice SDS.

The course then concludes with an interactive and practical workshop where you and the other attendees will evaluate and critique the SDSs that you have authored, which has proven to be a popular and effective way of reinforcing the concepts covered.

Regulatory Coverage

This course is based primarily upon OSHA’s Hazard Communication Standard at 29 CFR 1910.1200 and substance-specific health standards at 29 CFR 1910.1001-1052. However, other U.S. federal, state, and local and international regulations are addressed in appropriate sections of the SDS.

This is an introductory course which has been specifically created for individuals new to Hazard Communication, or as a refresher for experienced individuals who are working within a refocused or redefined role in HazCom.
